At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
