EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
