Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
