Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift Trophee des Champions Super Cup in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now secured the season-opening cup on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a comfortable triumph in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille struck twice in the closing moments to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.
