The English and Welsh Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales have been drawn in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a group once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa before the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
