The fast bowler Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
