This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
